English as a Second Language (ESL) FAQ

Q: Where are the classes located?
A: Most of the classes are at the main campus of Sutter County One Stop (formerly CTEC) - 256 Wilbur Ave.; Yuba City – but we do have classes in E. Nicolaus, Live Oak, Robbins, and other sites in Yuba City.

Q: What ESL classes are available?
A: Beginning Literacy – for those who read and or speak  little or no English
Intermediate ESL – for those who read and speak some English
Advanced ESL – for the student wanting to progress into the Adult Basic Education classes, or to prepare for Citizenship

Q: How can I enroll in ESL classes?
A: By getting on the waiting list – you will be notified when there is an opening.  You can call Sutter County One Stop at 530-822-5810, and ask them to put you on the waiting list – or email Balwinder Singh at bsingh@Sutter.k12.ca.us or Nola Kent at nkent@sutter.k12.ca.us

Q: What are the days and hours for the classes?
A: See the schedule of classes in the on-line catalog.

Q: How long are the classes?  Are they based on semesters?
A: All classes are competency based classes.  That means that when you can demonstrate competency in a subject by completing the assignments, and passing the tests, you will be awarded the credits.  So, the length of time is up to how fast you can do the work.  We don’t work on semester schedules.

Q: Do I have to come to class?
A: At this time - yes – 80% attendance is required in all classes.  In January 2007 we will begin Distance Learning for ESL classes.  This is a program for students to work at home and check in with the teacher on a weekly basis.

Q: What are the fees for classes?  Will I need to purchase books?
A: There are no fees for any Adult Education classes.  They are open to the public.  It is not necessary to purchase any books – we have classroom copies.  Some books are available for purchase, if desired.

Q: Is there Summer School?
A: Yes – for the students that desire a year round schedule.  There is a short break between the end of the regular school year and summer school – and another break between summer school and the beginning of the new school year.

Q: Donde tomaran cabo las clases?
La mayoria de las clases tomaran cabo en nuestra escuela  (Antes conocida como CTEC) – 256 Wilbur Ave, en Yuba City.
-Tambien ofrecemos clases en E. Nicolaus, Live Oak y otros sitios en Yuba City.

Q: Que clases de Apredisaje de Ingles tienen disponibles?
Comenzante de Litaratura – para esos quienes leen o hablan Ingles muy poquito or nada.
Intermediante de Ingles como Segundo Lenguage – para esos que hablan y leen in poco mas en Ingles.
Ingles Advansado – para los estudiantes que quieren progresar a las clases de Educasion Basica para Adultos, o para preparar para las clases Ciudadania.

Q: Como me me anoto para las clases de Ingles?
Hablenos para anotarlos en la lista de espera.  Nosotros nos comunicaremos con usteded cuando haiga cupo. Q: Cual es el horario de las clases?
Mire al horario de las clases en nuestro catalogo, disponible en nuestras paginas en la computadora.

Q: Cuanto duran las clases?  Estan basadas en semesters?
Todas las clases estan basadas segun el nivel del individual. Eso quiere decir que si usted demuestra habilidad en cierto nivel al terminar ese subjeto, y pasar el examen, se le ortorgaran los creditos.  En efecto, usted determina cuanto tiempo se toma, dependiendo en su propia habilidad.  No trabajamos en horarios de semesters.

Q: Tengo que venire a las clases?
Si, su presencia esta requerida por lo menos 80% del tiempo.

Q: Hay algun cargo por las clases?  Ocupo comprar libros?
No hay ningun cargo, las clases estan disponibles al publico completamente gratis.  No es neserario de comprar libros, tenemos copias de los libros.  Si gusta, hay libros en venta..

Q: Hay escuela de Verano?
Si – para los estudiantes que esten disponibles en esa tempporada.  Hay una quebrada de tiempo entre el termino de la escula regular y el comienzo de la escuela de Verano. –  tambien hay otra quebrada entre en termino de la escuela de Verano y el comienzo del nuevo año de escuela.
