“I never considered going into the Sutter County One Stop until it was recommended I visit their offices while in my job search mode. I was newly venturing out, into a land of applications and interviews, and had no idea where to begin and thought I wasn’t even ready for this step. I wound up going in and receiving services that I ever knew existed at this level. I have met with staff that have taken an interest in me as a person and have listened to my concerns, saw my strengths and the level of expertise I had to offer and counseled me in an effort to bring me from an emotional low to this euphoric high! I have been at rock bottom and I know I am not going back there again. That Tamara, she is professional, resourceful, pleasant and effective. She could talk a slasher out of the knife! I look forward to the continued communication with the One Stop and keeping the relationships/friendships I have gathered there for a lifetime.”

“I was laid off from my job in August of 2007. I was looking for work with no luck. I had been collecting unemployment and was asked to attend a meeting at Sutter County One Stop. In the meeting I was asked if I was interested in going to school.
I said yes I was interested but I didn’t have any monies to go to school. Sutter County One Stop said they could help pay for my school, which they did. I am now going to school to become a Phlebotomist, EKG Tech, & a Lab Tech, which I feel will open a lot of doors for employment when I am finished with school. I would like to thank Sutter County One Stop for helping me get into school. It is very much appreciated.”
Thank you,

“When my job of 18 yrs closed, I had no idea what I was going to do with myself, how to, or where to go! When I went to EDD I was introduced to the WIA (Workforce Investment Act) program – “yes” to all my questions for my future and prayers that something would show up to help me. I currently attend classes at the Sutter County One-Stop with help from WIA. They have payed for my classes, helped with book costs and helped with groceries when I first started to classes, because I was really in need. And the best for last, they helped me with a clothing stipend for clothes used in office work, and my first interview clothing and shoes.”
Thank you for being there.

“I want to give thanks to Sutter County One Stop and to my personal counselor Araceli Gonzalez for all the financial support I was provided while going through the Registered Nursing Program. Thanks to them I was provided financial aid for books, uniforms, and they even paid for my state boards. You lifted a great weight off my shoulders and allowed me to concentrate fully on school. Thank you!”

“I started attending classes here at the Sutter County One Stop in August of 2007 where I have been able to grow in my skills. The school also allowed me to participate in the student body committee and help organize an event to earn money to improve the school. I am in the Medical Assistant program where I’ve learned many things. I hope to be completed by October 2008. During my time at the Sutter County One stop I was greatly helped by the program WIA which purchased all of my books and uniforms for my MA class. My counselor Araceli Gonzalez was a big help to me in accomplishing my goals. I also appreciate Geneva Vargas, my MA class teacher, for all her support and encouragement. This school is great and makes you become the person that you want to be.”

“Well, my name is Mellissa and I was stuck at a dead end job, making $300.00 every 2 weeks, when I looked into Sutter County One-Stop. I was able to get right into the CNA class, and the class that I got into was able to work around my work schedule. I was really stressed over how I would afford everything, just becoming a first time home buyer, and a mother of 2. When I came to class they told me about the WIA program, and that’s when I had met Mady. Mady had helped me pay for all my books, uniforms, etc. I’m very happy with this program and I’m now on a path. Thank you.”

Gurjit Bariach |
Why do some males go into nontraditional careers, such as nursing? Gurjit made that career choice because he has always enjoyed science and he has a strong desire to help people. Thus, the perfect career choice was to be a nurse. One of Gurjit’s difficulties was caring for the female patients, it took him some time to adjust but he did just fine in his clinical rotations. Another difficulty that Gurjit faced was financial in nature. Prior to being accepted into the nursing program, Gurjit had a full time job. However, he had to reduce his hours to 1 day a week to accommodate his school schedule, which meant he now desperately needed financial assistance with his training expenses. WIA was able to provide him with such assistance and he just graduated from Butte College on the 18th of December. Now that he has completed the program, he will concentrate on obtaining his state license. Gurjit hopes to work in the Yuba Sutter area, and eventually return to school for his BSN. With his determination I’m sure Gurjit will succeed in reaching his goals. |

| JoAnna Tapia |
JoAnna Tapia is prove that anyone can reach their goals, if they stay positive and determined! JoAnna was a student in the 11-month full-time LVN class offered by the One Stop. The One-Stop received a special statewide nursing initiative grant to train 15
CNA’s to become LVN’s. This intensive program involved 8 hours of class daily, followed by 4 hours of homework a night. JoAnna successfully completed the course and graduated on June 28, 2008. She took and passed her LVN state examination on the first try and is now a licensed LVN in the state of CA. I’m pleased to announce that JoAnna immediately found employment with Colusa Regional Medical Center in Colusa as a full-time LVN. The hospital staff was so impressed with JoAnna’s bedside manner and positive attitude during her practice clinical rotations, that they offered her employment as a LVN. JoAnna loves working for Colusa Hospital and is learning so much from the staff and patients. Everyone has been so supportive and encouraging to JoAnna and she is truly appreciative of everyone’s efforts! |

| Marta Starmer |
Marta Starmer had recently returned to the Yuba-Sutter area after living out of state for several years. She had a series of experiences that left her questioning her abilities, her talents and her skill set. In meeting with Marta, she had talked herself into believing she had little to offer a business and did not even know where to start in the hunt for the position, where she would grow professionally once again. Marta attended the Interview to Paycheck workshop where she started to see her talents develop once more. In continuous conversation and offering a plan of businesses to seek options to explore and job search assistance, Marta has slowly been reawakened to the fabulous person she had thought she had left behind. She is highly motivated, wonderfully professional and has truly taken advantage of the services the Sutter County One Stop has to offer. Marta has been utilizing the staff at all levels through mini interview sessions, brainstorming in her job search quest and following thru with job leads being offered to her. Marta has been busy exploring options and business opportunities where her talents and experiences will be fully recognized. We look forward to seeing where Marta’s career shall take her as she continues to develop and be an active part of the Yuba-Sutter community. |

| Lamria Mattison |
Lamria Mattison came to the Sutter County One-Stop in June 2007 after hearing that our agency received a special statewide Nursing Initiative grant to sponsor high-growth occupations. The purpose of the grant was to train 15 C N A’s to become LVN’s in 11-months through an accelerated full-time LVN Program, in order to get more skilled nurses back into the workforce.
Lamria had previously attended school here and completed all of her pre-requisites for the LVN Program. She interviewed, passed her entrance exam, and completed the series of medical exams. Lamria started class on June 18, 2007 and only missed 2 days of class, during the 11-month program. She earned excellent marks in class and really became a role model for the other students in the class. Lamria successfully completed the course and graduated on June 26, 2008. She received a certificate of completion and will now begin studying for her state exam, in order to become a licensed LVN in the state of CA.
In addition, Lamria already has a LVN job waiting for her at Biggs-Gridley Hospital, once she passes the state board exam. Currently, she works as a C N A with that hospital. Lamria is just one of the many successful students, who continue to make a huge impact in this community! |

| Lisa Sharrock |
Lisa Sharrock was referred to the Sutter County One Stop by one of our partner agencies, for job placement assistance. Lisa had been out of the workforce for sometime and her previous work history was seasonal, required long hours and required physical labor. Lisa’s desire was to secure employment that would allow her to work in the clerical field and work a traditional work week of Monday thru Friday, as well as, allow for training on the job. Lisa had very limited clerical skills but was willing to work hard and prove that she could be a valuable employee. Within a months time the Sutter County One Stop was able to assist Lisa in obtaining direct placement with a local employer who was willing to provide the training Lisa would need to be able to complete her job duties. It has been almost a year and Lisa is still employed with the same employer as their Administrative Assistant/Bookkeeper. Congratulations Lisa, your determination and dedication has shown what a great employee you truly are! |
